How do I clean antique Gold? - antique gold mirror

My mother has recently made two gilded mirrors for me. It is much larger than the other, but both have intricate patterns and swirls around the frame of the mirror. The mirrors are gold, but to be as old as you are there, it's like this black opaque film about her and wonder what I can use to shine and to stop the black stuff! My mother suggested Brasso for a reason, and I tried but not working. Suggestions?
